Does your living room need a fresh look? Don’t have the cash to update the entire room? Kirkland’s is here to help! When it comes to living room decorating on a budget, we have some great ideas for refreshing your living space without draining your bank account.
If you’ve read our previous Room Refresh articles all about how to decorate on a budget, you’ll be glad to know that several of those tips can help with your living room as well. For instance, in our bathroom decorating ideas post, we suggested repainting the walls to add a different color dynamic. This tip works just as well for the living room, and we’ll even go one step further and suggest painting a single wall of the room with a bold accent color to strike a dramatic chord. As for the newer tips, let’s dive in:
Decorating Tip #1: Change Your Pillows & Curtains
No cutesy header needed for this one. One of the easiest—and cheapest—ways to change the look of your living room is to swap out the throw pillows on your sofa and the curtains on your windows for matching sets. You don’t have to find a matching pattern for both, mind you—solid prints in the same color will do. As a matter of fact, a solid print in a bold color like purple or turquoise can change the entire look of the room—particularly if your living room is full of neutral tones. Changing the textiles is a fantastic way to add a different feel to the room without doing anything drastic.
Decorating Tip #2: Love The Way You Light
Most living rooms have some form of overhead lighting, which is then accented by table lamps or floor lamps for specific areas in the room. An easy way to change the look of the room is to change up how you light it. Instead of using table lamps for the end tables flanking your sofa, why not use plug-in paper lanterns that hang over your seating space? Or, if you’d rather not deal with unsightly cords, you can opt for pendant lights.
Recessed lighting can help create a dramatic feel in your living room, and you don’t even have to install new fixtures in your ceiling to get it. If your sofa is against a wall, all it takes is a few uplights. Just position them behind your sofa, and the light will emanate up and out from them. The lights frame your sofa in a soft glow, and the light distributed along the wall helps add definition to your space.
Decorating Tip #3: Give Your Sofa The Slip
It’s been mentioned several times in this post, so you’ve probably figured out by now that the key feature in a living room tends to be the sofa. Sometimes, all you need to change in a room to give it a completely new look is the one key feature that defines it. And while changing your sofa isn’t exactly an inexpensive solution to redecorating, adding a slipcover to it certainly can be. Slipcovers can often be found for under $100, and they can completely change the look of your most popular hangout spot. So, go ahead…give one a try.
Redecorating your living room doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t have to be costly. Even on the most modest of budgets, you can easily refresh your living area and make it feel like a completely different space.
