There’s more to a color than just what your eye sees. Sure, sight is the most immediately affected sense, but a truly effective color goes deeper than that. There’s also the way it makes you feel—that tingling in your brain or the pull in your chest that happens when you’ve seen something that really resonates with you. Radiant Orchid is one of those colors. Perhaps that is why it captured the attention—and imagination—of Pantone.
Often described as the global color authority, Pantone is one of the most widely recognized resources for professional color standards in many design industries. For over 50 years, their color selections have influenced design trends in fashion, home decorating, and other industries. This year, they have selected Radiant Orchid as their 2014 Color of the Year.
Radiant Orchid: A Biography
Described in Pantone’s official 2014 Color of the Year press release as “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple,” Radiant Orchid takes the warmth and beauty of a rosy pink and combines it with the subtle, blushing glow of lavender. It is a versatile color that can be used to add a vibrant accent or create subtle balance in your decor. It’s all in how you use it, of course.
In a video posted on Pantone’s website, executive director Leatrice Eiseman explained why she chose Radiant Orchid: “It’s a color that encourages us to innovate,” she states. “It’s a color that draws you in; it’s a color that speaks to creativity. And that is so important in today’s life; we’re all looking for that touch of uniqueness, and I think that this is a color that can imbue you with that sense of uniqueness.” Eiseman goes on to add that Radiant Orchid has what she calls a “beguiling charm” to it: “It kind of embraces you,” she elaborates. “It pulls you into it.”
How To Use Radiant Orchid
To better understand Radiant Orchid, I reached out to some of Kirkland’s resident trend experts. Sarah, our E-Commerce Merchandise Specialist, regards the color as a powerful home accent when used the right way. “It’s great for small accent pieces like throw pillows or even an accent table or chair,” she said. She noted that the color had a warm and inviting tone, and suggested pairing it with white, pink, or certain shades of blue. “This is a color that will be noticed as soon as you walk into a room,” she added.
Karen, E-Commerce Merchandise Manager for Kirkland’s, suggests using Radiant Orchid as an accent when dreaming up a room’s color scheme. “It’s perfect for adding a pop of color to neutral color palettes,” she said, recommending pairing Radiant Orchid with colors like ivory, beige, or light gray for a lively effect in any room.
Add Radiance To Your Home
Looking for an easy way to add a Radiant Orchid accent to any room? Go the floral route. At Kirkland’s, we have many lavender and fuchsia stems and floral arrangements that can be used to add a pop of radiance to any neutral-colored room. And don’t forget about wreaths! Not just for front doors, wreaths and wall floral in Radiant Orchid-like colors can add the perfect accent to cream, beige, and other neutral wall colors. For an excellent non-floral accent option, look at our selection of throw pillows, especially if you have an off-white or neutral colored chair or sofa to accessorize.
