There’s no denying it; it’s hard to find a person who doesn’t enjoy an ocean view. According to a 2010 report by the NOAA, 39 percent of Americans live in counties directly on the shoreline, despite those areas constituting less than 10 percent of the country’s total land area. Even those of us who live nowhere near the ocean can appreciate its serenity and its majesty; a 2012 ABC News poll concluded that 72 percent of Americans prefer a vacation trip to the beach over any other destination. All those facts and figures to say: we like the beach. A lot. So why not bring a little bit of the coast into your home with coastal decor?
Decorating with coastal accents is a brilliant way to create a stress-free, vacation-esque feel in any room in your home. The beach and the ocean have long been associated with the idea of getting away from the rigors of daily life for a little rest and relaxation; it’s no wonder why so many people want to experience that feeling every day in their own homes. Coastal décor offers a way to infuse your surroundings with the look and feel of summer—that time of year that so many of us look forward to. And with so many different coastal themes and accents to choose from, it’s not difficult at all to add a little seaside flavor to your home. Motifs like coral, seashells, fish, seahorses, and starfish all recall the feeling of relaxing on the beach, while incorporating things like sailboats, anchors, ropes, and pulleys into your décor immediately puts you and your guests into a sea-faring state of mind.
Bringing The Beach To Your Home
So now that we know the why, let’s get to the how: How do you bring the coastal look into your home? First, decide how far you want to go down the coastal route; do you want to add a few accents here and there, or do you really want to go coastal on your place? Once you’ve decided that, you can decide how many of these tips you want to implement in your home.
For those really wanting the full coastal treatment, start with establishing a color pattern for the room you’re making over. You want base colors in ivory, cream, or other sand-like hues, along with accents in varying shades of blue. The key to creating a coastal setting is to emulate the look and feel of the beach, the ocean, and a clear, sunny sky, so keep that in mind when you’re choosing colors. For a coastal living room, decorate with wicker furniture in seagrass or rattan, then accessorize with cushions and throw pillows in off-whites and/or blues. (This works great for sitting rooms and sunrooms, too.) Seagrass trunks and baskets also make fantastic accents.
For a coastal bathroom, you typically have a smaller space to make your statement. However, with its water-centric function, your bath is the easiest room to pull off a nautical theme. You can decorate your countertop with coastal-themed jar sets and small statues (conch shells and starfish are great themes to work with here), and you can fill up your wall space with fishing nets, distressed wooden wall plaques, and small framed prints of beautiful coastal scenery. If you do opt for glass jar sets, make sure to fill them with mixed shells and sand to really tie the look together. And don’t forget the shower curtain! For cute, go with a fun themed print with shells or nautical accents. For classy, opt for coastal colors in a simple, attractive pattern.
In a coastal bedroom, feel free to dial back the coastal flavor a little; your bedroom should already have a relaxing feel, so redoing the whole room in a beach theme could be going a little overboard. Instead, pick one or two decorative touches to bring the flavor of the coast to your sleeping space. A pair of bedside lamps, a themed wall accent or two, and a few throw pillows in various hues of off-white, turquoise, and blue should do the trick. Decorating the bedroom with a coastal theme should really be more about utilizing color and space to create an open, breezy feeling rather than relying on the typical beach and ocean motifs. Make sure your accents are accents, not eye-catchers.
